Vasquez Rocks
Skały Vasqueza, niespełna 400-hektarowy park skalny położony około 70 km na północ od centrum Los Angeles w pasmie Gór Sierra Pelona, oferuje atrakcje terenowe, że tak powiem, nie z tej ziemi. Pewnie z tego też powodu w ciągu stu lat nakręcono tam blisko setkę filmów, liczne odcinki stu kilkadziesięciu seriali oraz ponad 20 muzycznych wideoklipów (po wszystko zajrzyj tutaj; wideoklipy - wybór 1, 2, 3).

Nazwa parku pochodzi od nazwiska lokalnego bandyty Tiburcio Vasqueza, który po dwudziestu latach bandyterki i serii napadów rabunkowych w południowej Kalifornii, zwiał przed wymiarem sprawiedliwości w 1873 roku w dramatyczne oligoceńsko-mioceńskie formacje żółtawo-czrwonawych piaskowców, zlepieńców i andezytowo-bazaltowych skał.

W uroczysku skał usztorcowanych pod kątem nawet do 50°, jako rezult kilkunastu milionów lat aktywności sejsmicznej Uskoku Św. Andrzeja, Tiburcio siedział jak w fortecy i przez długie miesiace kpił do żywego z poszukującego go szeryfa. Długotrwała bezczynność i brak kompanii zaczęły męczyć go, więc któregoś dnia wybrał się pobuszować kapkę w okolicy, którą jakieś piętnaście lat później zaczęto nazywać Hollywood (1). To właśnie tam, 14 maja 1874, roku szeryf Bill Rowland zakajdankował go na wniosek byłego poganiacza wielbłądów w Korpusie Wielbłądów Armii Amerykańskiej. Poganiacz zrobił to zemsty kiedy okazało się, że Tiburcio z braku zajęcia zapłodnił jego siostrzenicę. Areszt nastąpił w pobliżu miejsca, gdzie kilkadziesiąt lat później powstało jedno z pierwszych studiów filmowych, co można uznać za zdarzenie prorocze. Tak, prorocze, bowiem w 1954 roku Tiburcio Vasquez wszedł na ekrany telewizyjne w epizodzie 14 pierwszego sezonu serialu Stories of the Century, a trzy lata później pojawił się jeszcze raz w serialu Death Valley Days, w odcinku zatytułowanym „Ostatni zły człowiek”.

Historia okolic Skał Vasqueza nie zamyka się w byciu lokacyjnym tłem dla obfitej produkcji filmowej i wzmianki o pewnym draniu, bowiem znajdowane są tam liczne ślady Indian Tataviam, którzy zamieszkiwali ten teren przez ostatnie półtora tysiąca lat. Pozostawione przez nich i ich poprzedników misy żarnowe wykonane w głazach, liczne naskalne piktogramy i inne artefakty poświadczają stałą obecność ludzi w tym uroczysku od 10 000 lat(!). Centrum Przyrody Parku Vasqueza zaspokoi potrzeby wiedzy o faunie, florze, geologii i historii parku oraz pozwoli na wytchnienie w klimatyzowanych salach po godzinach spędzonych w terenie. Idąc na skałki nie zapominaj o butelce wody, czapce z daszkiem/kapeluszu z rondem, foto sprzęcie, jak i o tym, że jesteś gościem na salonach orłów przednich, rysi, kojotów, tarantul, grzechotników i wszelkiej postaci bzykadeł.

Vasquez Rocks

The park, spanning nearly 900 acres and situated approximately 45 miles north of downtown Los Angeles in the Sierra Pelona mountain range, offers otherworldly natural attractions. It is likely for this very reason that, over the course of a century, nearly one hundred films, numerous episodes of over one hundred TV series, and more than twenty music videos have been filmed there (to view a list of all productions, click here; choice of related music videos 1, 2, 3).

The park is named after a local bandit, Tiburcio Vasquez, who—after twenty years of banditry and a series of robberies in Southern California—fled from justice in 1873 taking refuge amidst picturesque rock formations dating back to the Oligocene and Miocene epochs, composed of yellowish-red sandstones, conglomerates, and andesite-basaltic rocks. In this mountainous terrain—shaped by rocks that, as a result of millions of years of seismic activity along the San Andreas Fault have been tilted at angles reaching up to 50 degrees, Tiburcio lived as if in a fortress and for months mocked the sheriff who was trying to locate and arrest him. However, the prolonged inactivity and lack of companionship eventually began to wear on him. Therefore, one day, he decided to venture out and explore the area that some fifteen years later, would come to be known as Hollywood (1). It was there, on May 14, 1874, that Sheriff Bill Rowland placed Tiburcio in handcuffs—acting on a tip-off from his new "accomplice," a former camel driver in the U.S. Army Camel Corps. The camel driver acted out of revenge after it came to light that Tiburcio—out of sheer boredom—had impregnated his niece. The arrest took place near the very spot where, several decades later, one of the first film studios would be erected—an occurrence that might well be regarded as prophetic. Yes, prophetic—for in 1954, Tiburcio Vasquez appeared on television screens in the episode 14 of the first season of the series "Stories of the Century", and three years later, he appeared again in the series "Death Valley Days", in an episode titled "The Last Bad Man".

The history of the Vasquez Rocks area is not limited merely to serving as a backdrop for numerous film productions or to tales of a certain notorious bandit. Above all, this site abounds with traces of the Tataviam people, who inhabited these lands for at least 1,500 years. However, grinding stones, numerous rock pictographs, and other artifacts left behind by them—and their predecessors—bear witness to an uninterrupted human presence at this location spanning 10,000 years (!). The Nature Center at Vasquez Rocks Park will fully satisfy visitors' curiosity regarding the park's fauna, flora, geology, and history, while also offering a moment of respite in air-conditioned comfort after hours spent out in the field. When heading out to the rocks, don't forget to bring a bottle of water, a baseball cap or a wide-brimmed hat, and a camera—and remember that you are a guest in the natural habitat of golden eagles, bobcats, coyotes, tarantulas, rattlesnakes, and various species of vultures.
